
Professional Development for Dance Teachers 2012
Tuesday, July 10 – Friday, July 13, 2012
NBS' Ideas Exchange seminar invites teachers to observe classes for students of all levels (ages 10-19) during the second week of the School's four week Summer Program (July 10 – July 13), which serves as a continuation of intensive training for NBS' Professional Ballet/Academic Program (PBP) students and the final assessment of youth aspiring to attend NBS' full time program. Observation classes (from 8:45am-4:00pm) will include daily Ballet Training, Pointe and/or Variations, Boys' Allegro, Character, Modern, Improvisation, Creative Dance, Jazz, and Pool Conditioning.
After 4:00pm (Tuesday – Friday)
Teachers will participate in a two hour interactive, pedagogical class/lecture. Content will include:
- Philosophical and practical work focusing on lower leg and foot issues through a review of strategies to effectively utilise plié and relevé movements; dynamically point the feet and strengthen the take-off and landing of jumps
- Interactive sessions with Irene Dowd, Neuromuscular Specialist and long-time NBS Consultant, to address the lower leg challenges noted above
- Discussions with NBS faculty on approaches to students observed by participants
Saturday, July 14th, from 9:00am – 1:00pm
Devoted entirely to Ideas Exchange participants. Content will include:
- Interactive sessions with Irene Dowd to continue discussing lower leg/foot challenges with the emphasis on exploring differing needs for specific foot structures and age-appropriate means of dealing with these.
- A ballet class specifically for the participants in which Irene Dowd's movement principles will be incorporated to demonstrate the practical use of Irene's work
